I Miss Squirrels Side Effects of Homesickness
Although I was moving from one English speaking continent to another, I still knew that I had to prepare myself for a serious bout of homesickness. I’d miss my friends, my family and my creature comforts of home. Outside of missing my friends and family, I wasn’t prepared for the ridiculous nature of what else I missed.
Matt Lauer
I found it to be a blessing that there are not that many TV channels in OZ. The weather is far too perfect to be inside numbing your brain. But in the States, I woke up and got ready for work every day to the Today Show with Matt Lauer. I used to find him annoying and a bit arrogant, but now I just wanted to see his face again after seeing him every day for the past 10 years.
Squirrels
A commercial came on the other night featuring a squirrel and I felt a little tug in my heart. Who knew I missed those little buggers and their daily antics! And I didn’t even think about the fact that they don’t have them here. It’s weird not seeing them everywhere. Although I think seeing a few more kangaroos might make me forget about squirrels altogether. Kangaroos are much cooler than squirrels.
The Gap
Not the one between the train and the platform, but the store. After all, any woman will tell you that once you find a brand of jeans that fit perfectly, you stick with them. Well, those were Gap jeans for me. So if Gap could please hurry up and get to Brisbane that would be wonderful. Hopefully my current pair last until they do.
Ketchup
Not tomato sauce, but the sugar filled Heinz product. Fortunately, I have recently located this product in large volume at the newly opened Costco. But it was tough getting through without it at the beginning, let me tell you! And also, I miss the obscene amount of ketchup packets that fast food restaurants provide in America. One packet per order here. Want anymore and you have to pay for them.
Snow
Just kidding! The one thing I will never miss will be cold weather, snow, ice, shoveling or anything else winter related.
