Do you know what Friday August 25th 2017 is in South Australia? It is FruChocs Appreciation Day. Now, some of you reading this won't even know what FruChocs are. They are a delicious treat consisting of dried apricot coated in chocolate, yum. In other states of Australia they are sold under the name Menz Choc Apricot Balls.

Whilst FruChoc Appreciation Day is a bit of fun and the opportunity to do some commercial promotion for this iconic chocolate treat, there are many other special days, weeks and even months throughout the year which highlight more serious health or social issues. Some are observed in a particular state or country and others are world wide events.

We have-
  • Kidney Health Week
  • World Diabetes Day
  • World Sight Day
  • Neighbour Day
  • Mental Health Week
  • Carers' Week
  • Adult Learners Week
  • Seniors Week
  • Children's Week
  • National Asthma Week

  • There is-
  • Universal Children's Day
  • White Ribbon Day
  • International Friendship Day
  • Red Nose Day
  • Jeans for Genes Day
  • Odd Socks Day
  • Harmony Day
  • World Stroke Day
  • Daffodil Day
  • Purple Day (which is connected to Epilepsy Awareness Month)

  • Overseas there is Clear Your Clutter Day (I wonder how long it will be before Australia also sees a need to highlight the problems of clutter by devoting a day to decluttering?)

The list of days/weeks/months which are given a special name and events or fundraisers are organised gets longer each year. Sometimes these events result in increased awareness and other times they don't seem to make much difference. And occasionally they are just for fun. Could I have a FruChoc please?
