A Friend In Need

It is great to have a friend or two to accompany you when you go to the movies or out for a meal. I appreciate my friend who phones up in summer and says, 'Let's go swimming.' Yes, I enjoy swimming but I need someone to motivate me to actually put my bathers on and pack a bag ready for an outing to the beach. It is great to have friends to share the good times with but when life turns bad,
that's when you really need a friend.
Oprah Winfrey expressed this so well when she said, 'Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.'
As an ordinary person I don't have to worry about the limo breaking down but there are plenty of times when life has been challenging and I have really appreciated help from a friend.
From my life experience, a true friend is someone who -
takes the day off work to come to your mother's funeral with you and literally holds your hand
comes to your father's funeral to support you, even though they never met your father

helps you paint your lounge room and it's the middle of summer
helps you move house
takes your pre-schooler to the playground to give you a break when you are recovering from an appendectomy
is there for you when your marriage breaks down
always listens to you without judging
remains your friend over the years through thick and through thin

Sometimes it isn't easy to be a true friend as you have to be supportive through the times when your friend is suffering, either physically or emotionally or perhaps both at the one time. Len Wein, comic book writer and editor sums it up by saying, 'A true friend is someone who is there for you when he'd rather be anywhere else.'
