Rubyfruit A Review

Rubyfruit A Review

Posted 2014-07-04 by crueltyfreechickfollow
Cruelty-free diners worldwide are envious of this little gem just being out of their reach, in the Blue Mountains, Australia. Even I am planning my next house move to be within a reasonable distance of Rubyfruit café. Though, I am still content driving the 137km round trip just to taste their delicacies.

Sometimes I actually have a reason to go up to the mountains, but for most of the time, I go purely for Rubyfruit. And, it is so nice to see Amanda and Simone, the lovely ladies who run the café. They are always so welcoming, and maintain great relationships with their customers. Being greeted with a hug is beautiful to see.

Rubyfruit is gently nestled within the heart of Leura, among the sublime scenery, and lively bustle of smiling tourists.

Looking for breakfast? It's now available on weekdays as well as during the weekends, from 10am until 12pm. The menu changes often, but my personal favourites are the raisin toast, and walnut and ginger toast, but the pièce de résistance is the orgasmic stack of banana and pecan pancakes, smothered in maple syrup. If you're lucky, those pancakes will be on your menu, your eyes will meet, and you will say to Amanda or Simone, "Please grant me the sweet pleasure of indulging in your pancakes."

Other options include the Big-Hearted Brekky, or the exquisitely presented parfait-style breakfast of banana, passionfruit, berries, and coconut yoghurt, topped with toasted flaked almonds, goji berries and chia seeds.

But, like myself, I know that you will not be fully content until you have a cake as well, so make sure you leave room after breakfast.

Now, if you're willing, you can work off your breakfast and dessert by walking around Leura, and exploring some of the sights, then you'll have to come back and have lunch!

There are so many amazing items on the lunch menu, it can be hard to pick just one, and then you have the lunch specials to contend with as well. It can all be a little daunting, really. Usually when I go to restaurants there are only so many choices available, while at Rubyfruit, everything is an option.

Recently, the lovely Amanda and Simone brought back my favourite lunch item, the BLAT (*bacon - faux meat, lettuce, avocado, and tomato). I was so shocked when I heard the news. There were lengthy battles over the BLAT because the original bacon suppliers, Redwood, discontinued their organic bio rashers. Rubyfruit then got their bacon from Suzy Spoon's Vegetarian Butcher in Newtown, but because of supply problems, Rubyfruit stopped making their awesome BLAT. I was devastated, but now, the BLAT is back! Hallelujah! Yet, I fear the day the BLAT once again disappears... and never returns.

Another lunch favourite of mine is the Burrito. That hit of coriander is to die for, and the combination of beans, sour cream and spicy flavours is utterly orgasmic. Be ready to get messy! Licking your fingers is not frowned upon, but welcomed in fact.

Keep an eye out for the specials too. Like the Caesar salad: greens, tomato, spanish onion, garlic-fried tofu, smokey rashers, *Vegusto piquant - vegan cheese, topped with mayo and pita crisps

The Aussie Banger Sanger is another special menu item. The secret: Linda McCartney sausages and fried onion on a fresh hot dog bun with tomato sauce and mustard with a side salad of your choosing. Mmm...

Now, I think it's time to have a quick look at the special dinner events. I've been to the Valentine's Day event and the Christmas lunch. I could go on and on about the amazing dishes that I was presented on those occasions, but I must say that my absolute favourite meal, full of serene yet, orgasmic pleasure, was the dessert at the 2013 Christmas event. Two choices were available during dessert, as you can see in the picture below, but it was the individually baked pecan pie cheesecake that took my fancy. The mouth-watering centre is enough to die for. It is now available as a regular item, and I'm pretty sure the reason is because of my many weeks of petitioning to my local MP to have the dessert in the display among Rubyfruit's other cake delicacies.

Top Dark Chocolate Mousse Tart, infused with black raspberry liqueur, topped with fresh raspberries and served with berry swirl icecream and raw cacao nibs. Bottom Individually Baked Pecan Pie Cheesecake, served with Vanilla Bean Icecream, Brandy Glaze and Maple Roasted Pecans

Other dishes during the special events included:
  • Beetroot and caramelised onion tart with basil pesto and herbed cream cheese.
  • Chickpea cutlets with lemon rosemary roasted potatoes and a rosemary and balsamic jus.
  • Seitan 'piccata' drizzled in a lemon and parsley butter sauce, served with a roast potato, pumpkin and sweet potato stack, topped with crispy kale.

  • I'll finish up this review with my picks:
  • Banana Rumba cupcake/cake
  • Chai latte with rice hazelnut milk
  • BLAT
  • Banana and pecan pancakes
  • Pecan pie cheesecake
  • Raisin toast
  • Walnut and ginger toast

  • Sadly, I can't eat all of the above in one sitting.

Go ahead and visit this beautiful little café. Your taste buds, stomach, and mind will thank you. Oh, and the animals too. Every time you eat cruelty-free, an animal or two out there thanks you!
