On the (Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd 2017) people in Australia are encouraged to hold a garage sale. The idea started in Bondi Beach in 2010 and has quickly become a popular idea in many areas. Full details are available at Garage Sale Trail

What is the Garage Sale Weekend about?
This is a weekend where people are able to hold a garage sale with free advertising through the internet. It is run by the Garage Sale Trail Foundation in conjunction with local councils. Not all councils are part of it but I gather it is possible for some people to be involved even if their local council hasn't signed up. My local council is involved.

Who can hold a garage sale?
The event is open to interested participants including
  • individual households
  • two or more households/friends who want to combine resources to hold a sale
  • community groups
  • schools
  • not-for-profit groups

    • What are the advantages of having a garage sale?
    Holding a garage sale is a good way to -
  • find new home for items you no longer need
  • get someone else to take away surplus furniture, diy materials, plants, household items, clothes etc
  • meet your neighbours
  • get some cash for unwanted goods
  • give yourself a goal for your decluttering efforts
  • keep items out of landfill
  • sell home made crafts or plants grown from seed or cuttings
  • fund-raise for a charity

    Do people make lots of money through holding a garage sale?
    I have read accounts of people making heaps of money from holding a garage sale. Although I have been happy with the money made from garage sales I have held over the years, I have never made a stack. However, I have not had high-ticket pieces for sale or a huge number of items.

    Is it worth the time and effort?
    Holding a garage sale involves lots of organisation but can be fun and provides interesting experiences. It is good to have one or more friends or family members to share the work with you and keep an eye on things while you are busy with customers. There are Pros And Cons Of Holding A Garage Sale

    I held a garage sale as part of the Garage Sale Trail in 2014 and enjoyed chatting to people. I gave away some items that weren't worth much as well as selling stuff so it really helped me declutter. A friend helped me and put a few items of her own out for sale. Last year I helped out at her garage sale and we plan to do the same this year. Due to my own decluttering projects I find this year I don't have stuff to contribute to her garage sale but I am very happy about that.
