Trust, tolerance, being strong and self-reliant, forming positive attitudes and making one’s own choices –these qualities and many more have proved to be developed through practicing regular yoga techniques. Having enough strength to face life’s challenges is an excellent motto for any person to start doing yoga. Being a parent, though, is even a greater motivation for starting up yoga as a joined family activity, since there is no greater value than building up a trusty relationship with your child. A mum and a daughter setting sails on this exciting and rewarding journey should just follow several steps.

What to wear – a question not so rare

The clothes you will be wearing while practicing yoga should provide you with comfort and let you move easily. Depending on the weather and temperature differences, you can go all from cozy cotton tracksuits and a t-shirt, to shorter leggings and a top. Colors can play a significant role, too. Choose light colors, white, pale pink, purple or blue, since they generally sooth the temper. Your girl would definitely like to choose her own outfit for this occasion – so, let her go dreamy and magical all the way she wants. A really touchy moment you can have is actually wearing leggings of the same style, color or pattern. Young girls love this since that would be just one way of saying how you two get on well together. Getting interesting leggings for your girl shouldn’t be so difficult, as there are many second hand options you may go for. Just be creative and ready to fully enjoy this occasion.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s most self-aware of all?

Ann Biese, a certified international Yoga Instructor and Teacher Trainer for ChildLight Yoga and a mother of two, points out the importance of helping a child to achieve “a peaceful mind” and self-awareness.1 This process leads to developing a healthy personality and it is very important as it completely opposes the overpowering approach towards a woman’s body presented through the massive media today. Children nowadays have to deal with a lot of peer pressure and distractions. Thus, the first step for mums and daughters should be making a decision to start doing yoga together as a regular activity. Expect having fun – lots of fun! Show your kid how excited you are about this and have no worries if you are a complete novice when it comes to it. If you relax, your daughter will follow. You can introduce your kid to various fun yoga poses to be done together in the morning. Some of these include: butterfly, tree, cobra, downward facing dog, chair squat, etc.

An exercise kids LOVE!

A mother bird – the very name speaks for itself – a mum is the foundation for her girl to rest and spread the wings when she’s ready. This exercise asks for both trust and courage, but don’t feel intimidated prior to trying it out. It’s actually so much fun. Mum’s starting position is lying down on the back, knees bent to chest. Further steps include placing feet on a girl’s hips, connecting hands and pressing heels to the sky so as to lift her up in a position parallel to your body. Steps a baby bird should follow are easy to catch up with and once you feel how the whole position affects both of you, you will want to repeat it in each session you do together.

Being a mum is the world’s toughest job. No matter what, a mum always strives to do the best for her baby. Yoga is a way to bond more, love each other more and gain more. Practicing yoga unlocks hidden inner mechanisms, helps you open up and build warm long-lasting relationships with your dear ones. And making it enjoyable, cozy and regular is the best way to do it.
