Each day there are two things that are pretty well certain in our lives - the sun will rise in the morning and it will set in the evening. What happens in between can feel like it's in our control, out of our control, unpredictable or very predictable. We may feel like the day is set as we go about our daily routine, doing the things we have to do. Hopefully we find some time to do some things we like to do. Of course some days are less predictable than others. Some days are total surprises.
At the end of each day it's good to spend a few moments reflecting. Taking the time to think about the day and its surprises. Perhaps it brought some new awareness to us,some new insights or understanding. Perhaps new people entered our lives, even for a fleeting moment. Someone may have been kind to us. We may have been kind to someone.
We can use these few moments to help guide us in to the future. To think about what we would like to be the same or different about tomorrow. To hope for the things that we wanted that didn't happen today. To decide to make some changes so that tomorrow's reflection time will be different.
We can use these few moments to appreciate what went well. To be grateful to have had the day. To be excited about what is yet to come. To notice the little things that mattered to us. To remind ourselves to notice even more tomorrow.
It can be an emotional time, sunset. The end of another day can mean we are another day closer to the end of our lives. It can mean darkness is about to fall. Evenings can be tough when we feel lonely or sad. It can remind us of lost opportunities, things we didn't do that day.
The rhythm of life with its sun rises and sun sets can be stabling for us too. It can help us keep up with time, gentling starting and finishing another day. Giving us a prompt to either get out of bed or get ready for bed - for most of us anyway. The routine might be different for others whose lives operate around another routine. This rhythm can bring us comfort if we allow it to. A sense that the world is going on around us. Usually we can choose how to interact with it, how to respond to the rhythm and use it to continue to grow and develop if only we can.
