Mothering teaches us many things. It teaches us to think of others before or instead of ourselves. It teaches us to listen and to tune into what is happening for others as well as tuning into our own intuition, our own feelings, our senses.
We can have our eyes opened through these experiences. Our children bring new ideas, new ways of seeing to a situation, ways we may never have thought about. They sometimes want different things to us and we can gain a new understanding or appreciation of life through their eyes, which in turn enriches our own.
Perhaps most of all we learn to always be calm. We learn to pick our battles. We learn to decide what matters most and to let some things go. We learn to observe and listen. We learn to respect choices that are different from our own. We learn lots about letting go and trusting the universe to keep our children safe when we are not there. We learn that it's best if we are not always there.
We learn that our love for our children can be boundless and endless. We learn that we have to balance the enormity of that with our own life so they are free to have their own life just as they want it to be.
