It can creep up on us, this journey through life. Before we know it it's well under way and we can barely remember how we got to this point. Many paths have been traveled, many bridges crossed and we know that many more lay ahead.
The pathway ahead may be clear and planned or it may be uncertain. It may feel within our control or largely outside of our control. It may have bright sky ahead or be cloudy and changeable.
The pathway may be smooth or have some bumps under ground. It might look smooth enough but the bumps might surprise us, catch us off guard. It's hard to know whether that's better than having a pathway that looks so bumpy that we can't bear to travel it. Those bumps can make us feel like we want to turn around and go back the way we came. As if that pathway is known and safe, although of course it may not be after all.
We might be sidetracked by some of the distractions along the pathway, the little flowers and bugs that can catch our eye. We might miss those if we are too focused on our pathway and the direction it's taking. What a shame it would be to miss those distractions. They can be part of the journey that make it so worthwhile.
If the pathway looks too much like the pathway we've traveled before it can become a bit boring, a bit too familiar - it could feel safe and secure though. Perhaps we need times when the journey is safe and secure, when we know exactly where we are heading and what lay ahead. At other times we want something more, a journey full of surprises that helps us feel alive, feel excited and energised.
Choosing whether to stay on the established pathway or leaving it to explore what lies beyond is may be the most interesting part of our life journey - if we allow it to be.
