A different kind of lane way this one in Sorrento, Italy. It was one of many, many lane ways you find when wandering around Sorrento. Some have houses or shops facing on to them. Sometimes there are little lane ways running off them as well. Lane ways upon lane ways. There's often a bicycle or scooter sitting in the lane way waiting for its owner to return. Sometimes there's a rider riding quickly around the corners. It's best to stay alert in these lane ways.
While you are looking and listening for scooters, it is really interesting to gaze upwards as well. There you will find a variety of things. Washing is quite prevalent, colorful and clean blowing a little in the breeze. Branches of trees and shrubs emerge from the roof tops of the houses. Sometimes there are fruit trees or flowers as well. Little balconies and lamp posts abound. So much so that after a while you barely notice them anymore.
Locals wander along these lane ways too. They might be shopping or heading back to their home after socialising. Usually friendly and welcoming they certainly make you feel at home in this little village made up of lane ways. You wish you weren't a tourist but one of them.
You need to watch your step in these lane ways. Underground can be a bit rough at times as the cobblestones continue to age. This reminds you that many feet have trodden these lane ways before you. Generations of Italians will have made their way down these little lane ways to meet up, shop and have fun together. It feels like a privilege to be allowed to share this.
