Another Melbourne lane way, more street art. I found this to be particularly poignant. Capturing it with the rubbish bins out (some with their own version of street art) just seemed to make it more special. Something about life's struggles I guess. Yet so hopeful at the same time.
The neatness and vibrant colors of this street art really stand out in this little lane way in Fitzroy, Melbourne. You really can't ignore it as you wander in the main streets and pause to look down the lane ways. At first you might only notice the colors at one end and not see the whole image. You may even miss the young man holding the string on your first sighting.
These lane ways are part of Melbourne's history yet are brought to life through these art works. I know little about this area of Melbourne but have read stories about the struggles of people living in extreme poverty in the inner city suburbs during times like the great depression. I see every day as I wander through this area during my lunch break the change that is coming over this area. New people moving in, while the older residents are still there as well. A diverse and rich community with real characters.
The bins in the image serve to bring us back to the realities of life. We can have vibrancy and energy, but we also have rubbish in our lives to discard, throw away, not see again. Bin day gives us this opportunity each week to go through this throwing out process. We can then go back to more energising pursuits.
I can't help but wonder about this piece of art work and its significance here in this place though. Sometimes art work seems random and at the whim of the artist who happens to find the place. But it almost feels like this piece of art has itself found the place. And forced the artist to follow.
I just can't help but feel like it captures the energy of this place, the juxtaposition between freedom and struggle. The balancing act of this community with the old and the new. Even the rich and the poor. While the young man looks bent, tired and needing strength to pull the string, what he pulls behind him is full of life and energy. It could also be significant that it is a young man pulling the strings. A young man with his life ahead of him, leading the way, taking charge, bringing hope and life to the community.
