Life jacket on rocks

We all need something that keeps us alive, keeps us afloat during life's struggles. We might have periods in our lives when things run smoothly and we can go about our day to day life calmly and confidently. Then struggles can hit. They can build up slowly and finally hit us, without much of a surprise. Or they can sneak up on us and hit us with an incredible bang. It's only when we look back that we might then be able to see the signs that the trouble was on the way. At the time we might have been focused on too many other thing, maybe even trying to keep the troubles at bay.

So a life ring or life jacket is what we all need to help us keep ourselves steady and afloat against the barrage of troubles that might come our way. We might be able to fit our own life jacket or we might need help to fit it. Having the courage to ask for help can indeed be a life saving act. Building our internal courage to keep ourselves afloat is an ongoing life journey.

We never know what will happen next. Sometimes there are really pleasant surprises. Achievements that come our way. People recognising our abilities or strengths. These positive reinforcements and recognitions flesh out our internal life jacket. They provide a buffer for those times when life is more challenging. Those times when disappointment strikes. When we are surprised in ways that are not so positive. When we are blindsided by something we didn't see coming. When old wounds open up leaving us feeling vulnerable and raw. The more protective our life jacket is at those times the better we will be able to ride out those periods. Keep ourselves afloat, keep our spirit alive and growing. We might even learn more about ourselves and our great capacities at those times - surely we learn more from difficult times than during calm times. That could well be the essence of true resilience.

Sometimes it's a matter of riding out the waves, of trusting that things will improve with time. Knowing that on another day well into the future we could look back and wonder what the fuss was about. That in the bigger scheme of things this situation was just a blip, an annoying wave in life, not life itself. It will be the life jacket that helps us ride out that wave though, keep us alive to be in a position to look back on it later.
