As the sun rises yet again for another day we can very easily take it for granted, trusting in the universe that the sun always comes up. Or we can take a different approach and be mindful of the opportunity each new day brings us.
Some mornings can be so busy that we hardly notice that the sun has come up. It has arisen as a marker for the new day. As a marker for us to get up and on whatever the day has in store for us.
On other mornings we might have some time to reflect on what it is we usually take for granted. We can reflect on the miracle of the world we live in and the structure that it provides for us when the sun rises and sets every day.
We might be thinking about people who are in other parts of the world. Where the sun has gone down for the day or where it hasn't arisen yet. When we think about this we might feel part of something bigger, part of a universe that we don't control, that is bigger than us. We can feel connected to each other when we know that we share these experiences.
Some mornings come with dread. Dread for what the day has to bring. Dread because it is so much part of our usual routine that we are bored. Dread because there is something we have to face that we are scared about or worried about. The sun rise tells us that the day has arrived, that we can't avoid it no matter what we do. Even staying in bed won't stop the time from coming and passing.
Learning to embrace each day as the miracle it really is, learning to face the opportunities the day brings, learning to face the challenges and fears the day brings are all important for us to get the best out of our lives.
