This little bridge over one of the Venetian canals almost appears to hold the buildings together. It is a particularly narrow canal this one and you can wonder how the gondoliers are able to navigate such a small environment.
The experience of being in Venice is one of wonder with the many sights awaiting you. The sense of history and tradition is powerful and the smooth way in which the gondolas make their way around the canal system adds to the mystique. You know they've been doing this for a very long time and you can't help but be captivated by the scenes. It's like you've stepped into a child's story book.
This image taken from another bridge brings a perspective of the canal and the buildings that line the canals as well as the gondolas coming towards the bridge. The reflections on the water simply amplify the overall effect of wonder. The buildings with their crumbling exteriors and little windows and doorways leave you fascinated with what lies behind those doors and windows. Is it extravagance or just your average home? Is it full of tourists or residents who live in this very fine city?
If you are on another gondola travelling gently along the canals your perspective shifts to the other gondolas and vessels on the waterway. You become engaged in the movement and skill of the gondolier. You look up at the buildings but it's a different scene you notice. You notice that you don't typically see people behind those windows and doors. That leaves you intrigued as well. You notice the extent of damage on the walls of the buildings sitting in the canals and you wonder how they are still standing. You notice the faces of the other tourists on the gondolas and feel caught up in a world that is just like a fantasy.
You know that each of these bridges has a story. They have served their purpose in a particular time in history. It's hard to keep up with all of the stories that you hear and you even wonder after a while what is true and what has become a Venetian legend after all the time that has passed.
