This is a very common sight in Amsterdam. Bridges over canals with bikes lining the them can be seen everywhere you look. There's certainly something distinctive about these images.
Touring the canals of Amsterdam is a tourist's delight. You are able to see a wide range of river boats and ships, some that are used as homes. These are my favorites. They sometimes have little gardens and nick-nacks that make them so homely. They are often brightly colored, almost as if wanting to stand out and be noticed amongst all of the other boats.
The buildings alongside the canals are also distinctive. They are set back from the canals so there are little roads, street signs and lamp posts out the front. They are also often multi colored which serves to set them apart. They have little decorative windows.
Then there's the bikes. And there are certainly plenty of bikes.Everywhere you look there are bikes lining the streets and canal banks. They look most impressive of course when silhouetted on the bridges.Again some are colorful and beautifully decorated. Others are much more functional, just serving their purpose rather than looking good.
People also sometimes line the banks of the canals. They might be meeting up and chatting, smoking their legal substances or walking by. The lack of cars in the main city area bring a calmness and order to this place. The people seem relaxed and not affected by time. Perhaps it's the effects of those substances but I can't also help wondering whether the bikes help to slow down the place.
